» Worked All Mayo
The Mayo Radio Experimenters Network run the Worked All Mayo award scheme. This is based on the WorkedAllIreland Award, and Mayo squares worked count for both awards. There are 93 Squares (1 Square = 10km X 10km) in County Mayo and the awards are as follows:
- Platinum - All 93 Squares
Squares can be claimed:
- For working any station fixed or mobile in the square.
- For activating the square.
SWLs may claim the square by hearing a station in a QSO (not just calling - a QSO must be in place), operating from the square. Both stations in the QSO need not be heard.
Claiming Your Award
Certificates are issued for each award and cost €6.50 each except the Platinum which is free. Applications for an award should be made to the Awards Manager:
John Corless, EI7IQ
Coolaght,
Claremorris,
Co. Mayo,
Ireland.
Entry forms are available, but are not necessary. Applicants need only make a list of Square No., Date, Station Worked and Band.
Operating Aids
You may find it useful to get a copy of the West Of Ireland Holdiday Map, published by the Ordanance Survey of Ireland. The 10 km squares are clearly marked on this map. I've written the square name in pencil within each square on my copy. As this map folds out to a single flat sheet it can be mounted to a wall. When there's a lot of activity I like to have the map on the wall near the radio, and then use Post-it note index markers to show the current location of each mobile station.
Activity
There is a very active WorkedAllIreland net on 7.068 MHz USB. This can be very busy at weekends, and activity is often heard on week days. The MayoFrequencies are worth listening to as well, particularly 145.375 which is the local 2m simplex channel. You may also be able to gain a new square by making a repeater contact and then asking for a simplex QSO.
